Het ‘remote working’, op afstand werken met behulp van een internetverbinding, is een manier van werken die erg in opkomst is. Bij het bedrijf HotelQuickly gaan ze echter nog een stapje verder: geen vaste werktijden, geen vaste werkplaats, geen vast aantal vakantiedagen, alleen targets die gehaald moeten worden. De 22-jarige Nederlander Chris Schalkx werkt voor dat bedrijf en woont in Bangkok. Aan Metro vertelt hij over zijn ervaringen.

Bangkok

Het begon voor Schalkx allemaal met een reis door Azië. „Tijdens die reis van 8 maanden bleef ik maar terugkomen in Bangkok, omdat het na een paar keer al als ‘thuis' voelde. Toen ik mijn reis afsloot en weer terug in Nederland was, zat ik tien dagen later alweer in het vliegtuig richting Thailand, omdat ik het zo ontzettend miste”, legt hij vanuit Bangkok uit. „Ik besloot van Bangkok mijn thuis te maken: de energie die je in Aziatische steden vindt, is zo anders dan in Europa.”

Het was voor hem dan ook geen grote stap om in april 2014 in Bangkok aan de slag te gaan als stagiair marketing in het kader van zijn opleiding Media & Cultuur – Digitale Media aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Dat deed hij bij HotelQuickly, een bedrijf dat zijn meer dan 100 werknemers stimuleert het kantoor achter zich te laten, de wereld te ontdekken en te werken vanaf de plek waar zij dat het fijnst vinden. Inmiddels heeft Schalkx zijn stage afgerond en is hij fulltime in dienst bij het bedrijf als ‘Head Social Media & Email’: „Maar de titel is slechts een titel, ik heb zo veel andere taken. Ik ben ook veel bezig met branding, graphic design en PR.”

Voor Schalkx is werkelijk geen week hetzelfde, zo legt hij uit. „Wanneer ik thuis in Bangkok ben, werk ik meestal drie dagen per week op ons kantoor en twee dagen thuis of in een coffeeshop. Maar een paar keer per maand probeer ik ook aan Bangkok te ontsnappen en ergens vanuit het buitenland of vanaf een andere plaats in Bangkok te werken.”

En dat is goed mogelijk, want de onderneming waar Schalkx werkt geeft werknemers de vrijheid te werken vanaf een plek waar ze zich het productiefst voelen. Voor Schalkx gebeurt dat de ene keer via een ‘minivakantie’ in Chiang Mai of Krabi, dan weer op een ander kantoor van de organisatie, in Taipei of Singapore. „Maar het productiefst ben ik als ik in een van de koffietentjes werk die mijn buurt rijk is, waarvan Rocket mijn favoriet is.”

Targets

Bovendien werken de werknemers van HotelQuickly niet volgens een vast aantal uren. Alles staat of valt bij het halen van targets. „Daardoor hoef ik niet op een vrije dag te wachten of mijn vakantiedagen op te sparen om ergens heen te gaan. Ik zou er niet aan moeten denken dat ik maar een beperkt aantal dagen per jaar Thailand uit kan”, vertelt hij. De vrijheid om te kunnen blijven reizen, is voor Schalkx dan ook een groot voordeel aan zijn werk. „Een paar dagen Hong Kong, een vakantie in India of op visite bij mijn ‘schoonouders’ in Taiwan; het kan allemaal. Zolang ik maar een internetverbinding heb.”

Dat klinkt als de beste werkgever op aarde, maar Schalkx benadrukt dat het je ondanks alles niet komt aanwaaien. „Het is zeker niet ‘lang leve de lol’. De deadlines zijn net zo hard als bij een typische negen-tot-vijfbaan. Daarvoor is een flinke dosis zelfdiscipline nodig. Er is ruimte voor plezier, maar er moet ook zeker gepresteerd worden”, verzekert hij. Alleen daarom al denkt Schalkx dat deze manier van werken niet voor iedereen is weggelegd. „De vrijheid komt met een grote verantwoordelijkheid. Daarnaast moet je je negen-tot-vijfmentaliteit uit kunnen schakelen. Zeker in mijn functie moet ik eigenlijk altijd beschikbaar zijn. Het komt vaak voor dat ik ‘s avonds laat of in het weekend nog een en ander moet doen. Voor mij geen probleem, maar misschien niet zo makkelijk voor een ander.”

Bovendien werkt deze manier van werken volgens de Nederlander, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Soest, niet voor elk bedrijf. „Binnen ons bedrijf werkt het ook niet bij onze klantenservice en IT-teams. Maar verder werkt de instantie voornamelijk ‘in de cloud’ en mijn baan speelt zich vrijwel geheel online af; dat geeft me de vrijheid om niet aan een locatie verbonden te zijn.”

Op zijn plek

De hamvraag is natuurlijk wel: verdient het ook een beetje? „Ik heb een voor Nederlandse begrippen redelijk standaard starterssalaris, maar dat is hier wel veel meer waard dan in Nederland", legt Schalkx uit. „Daarnaast heb ik ook redelijk wat financiële meevallers; ik hoef bijvoorbeeld geen huur te betalen. Hier kan ik er dus prima van leven", lacht hij.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat Schalkx op zijn plek is in Azië: hij heeft er zijn vriendin, zijn werk en zijn levensstijl gevonden. Kijkend naar de toekomst verwacht hij dan ook over een aantal jaar nog altijd in Azië te wonen. „Taiwan is een grote kanshebber, omdat mijn vriendin daar vandaan komt. Terugkeren naar Nederland zie ik niet zo zitten. Ik mis mijn familie en vrienden wel, maar de levensstandaard hier is toch een stuk aangenamer.”


Het mag dan ook geen verrassing heten dat de Nederlander anderen een positief advies zou geven als het gaat om deze manier van werken. „Wellicht zelfs bij HotelQuickly. We zijn hard op zoek naar developers, dus als iemand zich geroepen voelt", sluit hij af.
