in the 1960s the remote control and powered feature or doors was introduced on cars designed for ll platforms only. this was first found on the rock island in single level commuter cars, and later in the gallery (two level) cars widely used in chicago, ill., san francisco, calif., and other metropolitan area commuter services, and later, some intercity services. the floor on these cars is at normal car floor height, so four or five steps are required as shown in fig. 2 (b). these have the same labor saving features of the hl design, and also reduce significantly dwell time. this the sign is also clearly a secure design.a variant of this is found in the double deck design (actually three levels) originated by the urban transportation development corp. (utdc) for the toronto area and now used on many new commuter services (such as those in the los angeles, calif., miami, fla., and seattle, wash. areas). the lower floor where the doors are located is just two steps above a ll platform, and is also a secure design.
